OBD-II fault code

P0A23: Generator Torque Sensor Circuit Range/Performance

What it means

The generator torque sensor reports a circuit range/performance fault. Generator torque feedback is unreliable.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The generator torque sensor measures torque on the generator side of the hybrid drive and sends feedback to the control system. This code sets when the signal is present but its value or response does not match the expected range or behavior for operating conditions.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Torque sensor failed
  2. Wiring fault
  3. Sensor element aged beyond calibration window

Symptoms

  • Hybrid system or check-engine warning light on
  • Reduced hybrid power or acceleration
  • Possible rough or inconsistent power delivery

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and review generator torque sensor values alongside engine and motor operating data to see when the reading falls outside expected behavior.
  2. Inspect the generator torque sensor and harness connectors for damage, corrosion, moisture, or poor seating.
  3. Check wiring, reference, and ground for excessive resistance or unstable connections that could skew the sensor reading.
  4. Compare sensor output and response through the operating conditions specified by the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure.
  5. If the circuit is sound but feedback remains outside the expected range, test for a worn or failed generator torque sensor.

Common fixes

  • Correct a poor connector fit or damaged sensor wiring.
  • Repair weak reference or ground connections affecting the reading.
  • Replace a generator torque sensor that fails the specified range or response test.
  • Clear the code and confirm normal feedback after the repair.

Can I keep driving?

The control system may limit hybrid output or make power delivery rough when generator torque feedback is out of range. Keep acceleration gentle and avoid a long journey until checked, especially if warnings or reduced power persist.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
