OBD-II fault code

P0A17: Motor Torque Sensor Circuit

What it means

The drive motor torque sensor reports a circuit fault. Motor torque feedback is unreliable.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The motor torque sensor provides the hybrid control system with feedback about drive motor torque. This code sets when the sensor circuit itself has a fault, making that feedback unreliable; the system may limit motor output to protect the hybrid powertrain.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Torque sensor failed
  2. Wiring fault

Symptoms

  • Hybrid system or check-engine warning light on
  • Reduced hybrid power or acceleration
  • Possible rough or inconsistent power delivery

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and read hybrid-system codes and torque-sensor live data with a scan tool that can access the hybrid control modules.
  2. Check whether the fault is current or intermittent and note any related sensor, supply, or communication codes before clearing anything.
  3. With the vehicle powered down according to its service information, inspect the torque-sensor connector and harness for damage, looseness, or corrosion.
  4. Check the sensor circuit wiring and connections using the vehicle wiring diagram and the manufacturer's test procedure.
  5. Test the torque sensor and its circuit against the manufacturer's specification before considering module replacement.

Common fixes

  • Secure the torque-sensor connector and repair damaged terminals.
  • Repair wiring faults in the motor torque sensor circuit.
  • Replace the torque sensor if it fails the specified circuit tests.

Can I keep driving?

Reduced power or inconsistent acceleration can make merging and passing unsafe, so avoid high-speed or demanding driving. If the vehicle enters limp mode, loses power sharply, or will not enter READY, stop somewhere safe and arrange assistance.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
