OBD-II fault code

P0A09: DC/DC Converter Status Circuit Low

What it means

The hybrid control module detects an electrical fault on the DC/DC converter status feedback line. This converter steps high-voltage battery output down to 12 V for the auxiliary system.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The DC/DC converter changes high-voltage battery power into the low voltage that supports the 12-volt battery and vehicle electronics. P0A09 sets when the converter status feedback signal is electrically lower than expected, indicating a low status circuit signal or loss of a valid converter status.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. DC/DC converter internal fault
  2. Communication loss with converter

Symptoms

  • Hybrid system or check-engine warning light on
  • 12-volt battery warning or low-voltage symptoms
  • Vehicle may not enter READY mode

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and scan for communication, converter, and low-voltage codes to determine whether the fault is isolated to the status line.
  2. Check whether the vehicle enters READY and assess 12-volt battery voltage and charging behavior using the manufacturer's procedure.
  3. Inspect the DC/DC converter status connector and harness for corrosion, loose terminals, damage, or a signal wire shorted to ground.
  4. With the hybrid system made safe under manufacturer procedures, test the status circuit for shorts, continuity, and terminal contact.
  5. If the wiring passes, test converter communication and status output according to the manufacturer's specification.

Common fixes

  • Clean and secure a loose or corroded converter status connector.
  • Repair a status wire shorted to ground or otherwise damaged.
  • Repair communication wiring or connections if testing identifies a loss of communication.
  • Replace or repair the DC/DC converter if its status output or operation fails the specified test.
  • Recharge or replace the 12-volt battery if it has been depleted or damaged.

Can I keep driving?

If the vehicle will not enter READY or the 12-volt battery warning is on, do not rely on it for a journey because the vehicle may lose electrical power or fail to start. If it remains in READY, drive only as needed to reach a safe location and stop if charging or electrical warnings worsen.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
