OBD-II fault code

P0A08: DC/DC Converter Status Circuit

What it means

The DC/DC converter status feedback circuit reports a generic fault. Converter operating state cannot be verified reliably.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The DC/DC converter reduces high-voltage hybrid battery power to the low voltage used by the 12-volt electrical system. The hybrid control module monitors the converter's status feedback circuit, and this code sets when the reported operating status is faulty or cannot be verified reliably.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Status feedback wire fault
  2. Converter status output fault

Symptoms

  • Hybrid system or check-engine warning light on
  • 12-volt battery may lose charge
  • Possible reduced hybrid power

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and scan for related hybrid, converter, and 12-volt system codes before clearing faults.
  2. Check the 12-volt battery condition and charging behavior using the vehicle manufacturer's diagnostic procedure, since converter problems can leave it undercharged.
  3. Inspect the DC/DC converter status connector and wiring for looseness, corrosion, damage, or a broken status wire.
  4. Test the status feedback circuit for continuity, shorts, and secure terminal contact according to the manufacturer's specification.
  5. If the feedback wiring passes, follow the manufacturer's procedure to verify converter status output and converter operation.

Common fixes

  • Repair a loose, damaged, or corroded status feedback connection.
  • Repair an open or short in the converter status wiring.
  • Replace or repair the DC/DC converter if its status output or operation fails the specified test.
  • Recharge or replace the 12-volt battery if testing shows it was damaged by low charging.

Can I keep driving?

Driving may be possible briefly if the vehicle remains in READY and the 12-volt system is stable, but avoid unnecessary trips because the battery may lose charge and the vehicle may shut down or fail to restart. Stop if electrical warnings multiply or the vehicle leaves READY mode.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
