What it means
The gate select position circuit B reports a range/performance fault. Selector gate position cannot be reliably measured on this channel.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
Gate select position circuit B reports the position of the selector gate to the transmission control system. P09A3 sets when the channel B signal is present but falls outside the expected range or does not behave consistently with selector movement.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Position sensor failed
- Wiring fault
- Sensor element aged beyond calibration window
Symptoms
- Check engine or transmission warning light on
- Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
- Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
- Slipping or shuddering during gear changes
How to diagnose it
- Capture freeze-frame data, then observe live channel B position while moving the selector slowly through each gate to find where the reading becomes implausible.
- Inspect the gate select sensor and channel B harness for loose mounting, connector corrosion, wiring damage, or poor terminal contact.
- Check channel B wiring continuity and connections using the manufacturer's circuit information.
- Test the sensor's channel B output across selector positions and compare its behavior with the manufacturer's specification.
- If the circuit is sound but the signal remains out of range, assess sensor condition and calibration using the vehicle's specified procedure.
Common fixes
- Restore a loose sensor or connector connection.
- Repair damaged or high-resistance wiring in the channel B circuit.
- Replace the gate select position sensor if its channel B signal is outside specification.
- Carry out the manufacturer's sensor adjustment or calibration procedure if required.
Can I keep driving?
If the vehicle still selects gears normally, drive gently only as needed to reach a safe place for diagnosis; stop if it shifts unpredictably or enters limp mode. An implausible gate reading can lead to missed or incorrect gear selection.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
