OBD-II fault code

P09A6: Gate Select Position Circuit C Circuit

What it means

The gate select position circuit C reports a circuit fault. Selector gate position cannot be reliably measured on this channel.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Gate select position circuit C carries a position signal used by the transmission control system to determine which selector gate is engaged. P09A6 indicates a general circuit fault on channel C, making that channel's position information unreliable.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Position sensor failed
  2. Wiring fault

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame and transmission codes, then watch live channel C gate-position data while moving the selector through its positions.
  2. Inspect the gate select sensor connector and channel C wiring for loose or corroded terminals, damaged insulation, or chafing.
  3. Check channel C circuit continuity and connector condition using the manufacturer's wiring information.
  4. Test the position sensor's channel C output according to the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure.
  5. If the sensor and harness pass, inspect the control module connector and channel C input circuit.

Common fixes

  • Reconnect the sensor plug or secure a loose channel C terminal.
  • Repair an open, short, or damaged wire in the channel C circuit.
  • Replace the gate select position sensor if its channel C output fails the specified test.
  • Repair a damaged module-side connection if the sensor and wiring check out.

Can I keep driving?

If shifting is erratic or limp mode is active, stop when safe and arrange recovery, since the transmission may not correctly recognize gate position. If it still selects gears reliably, avoid hard acceleration and unnecessary trips until diagnosed.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
