What it means
The gate select position circuit C reports a high fault. Selector gate position cannot be reliably measured on this channel.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
Gate select position circuit C carries selector gate information to the transmission control system. P09A9 sets when the channel C signal is higher than its expected range, which can make the reported gate position unreliable.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Position sensor failed
- Wiring fault
Symptoms
- Check engine or transmission warning light on
- Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
- Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
- Slipping or shuddering during gear changes
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and watch live channel C readings while moving the selector to see whether the signal stays high or fails to follow position.
- Inspect the channel C harness and sensor connector for a short to the supply circuit, damaged insulation, corrosion, or a loose terminal.
- Check channel C wiring and its supply and ground paths using the manufacturer's circuit information.
- Test the sensor output across selector positions against the manufacturer's specification.
- If the sensor and wiring pass, inspect the module connector and channel C input for a short or terminal damage.
Common fixes
- Secure the sensor connector and restore proper terminal contact.
- Repair a channel C wire shorted to the supply circuit or otherwise damaged.
- Replace the gate select position sensor if its channel C output remains above specification.
- Repair a damaged module-side input connection if the sensor and harness are sound.
Can I keep driving?
Stop driving if selector recognition is unreliable, shifts are unpredictable, or limp mode is active; the transmission may limit or mishandle gear selection. If it still shifts normally, drive gently only as needed and arrange diagnosis soon.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
