OBD-II fault code

P0933: Hydraulic Pressure Sensor Range/Performance

What it means

The hydraulic pressure sensor reports a range/performance fault. Hydraulic system pressure feedback is unreliable.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The hydraulic pressure sensor reports transmission hydraulic pressure to the control module so it can manage shifts. P0933 sets when the signal is present but falls outside the expected range or does not track pressure changes as expected, which can prompt limp mode.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Pressure sensor failed
  2. Wiring fault
  3. Sensor element aged beyond calibration window

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and review transmission codes to see what operating conditions accompanied the pressure reading fault.
  2. Watch the pressure sensor live data while the transmission operates and check whether it changes plausibly with gear and load.
  3. Inspect the sensor connector and wiring for corrosion, loose contacts, damage, or routing that could cause intermittent resistance.
  4. Check the sensor's supply, ground, and signal circuits for abnormal resistance or voltage, using the manufacturer's specification.
  5. Compare sensor feedback with pressure measured by the vehicle maker's prescribed procedure to separate a sensor fault from a hydraulic problem.
  6. If wiring and actual pressure are satisfactory, test the sensor for a slow or out-of-calibration response.

Common fixes

  • Clean and secure a high-resistance or corroded pressure sensor connection.
  • Repair damaged pressure sensor wiring.
  • Replace the pressure sensor if its output is slow or outside calibration.

Can I keep driving?

Limp mode or poor shifting may make normal driving unsafe, so avoid fast roads, towing, and heavy loads. Stop if the transmission slips, shudders badly, or loses drive because continued operation can cause further damage.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
