What it means
The gear shift position circuit A reports a circuit fault. Gear shift position feedback is unreliable on this channel.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
Gear shift position circuit A carries feedback about the selector or shift mechanism position to the TCM. P0914 sets when the module detects a fault in this feedback channel, so it cannot reliably confirm the position it is monitoring.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Position sensor failed
- Wiring fault
Symptoms
- Check engine or transmission warning light on
- Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
- Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
- Slipping or shuddering during gear changes
How to diagnose it
- Save freeze-frame data and compare circuit A's live position reading with the selected and commanded gear to identify when feedback becomes unreliable.
- Inspect the circuit A position sensor connector and wiring for loose terminals, corrosion, moisture, or damage.
- Check the sensor's power, ground, and signal wiring using the vehicle wiring diagram, looking for opens or shorts.
- Move the selector through its positions while monitoring circuit A live data for missing, stuck, or erratic feedback.
- If the wiring checks out, test the position sensor and its signal against the manufacturer's specification.
Common fixes
- Reconnect a loose circuit A sensor connector and repair damaged wiring.
- Clean or replace corroded terminals and restore connector sealing.
- Replace the circuit A position sensor if its output fails testing.
- Repair the selector or linkage if it prevents the sensor from tracking position.
Can I keep driving?
If the transmission still selects gears predictably, limit driving to a short trip for diagnosis; stop if shifts become harsh, delayed, or unavailable. The TCM may enter limp mode, leaving you with limited gear control.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
