What it means
The gear shift position sensor signal is implausible relative to commanded gear, suggesting linkage misadjustment or sensor drift.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
The gear shift position circuit reports where the shift mechanism is, and the TCM compares that feedback with the gear it commanded. P0915 sets when the reported position is outside the expected range or does not track the command, which can indicate linkage misadjustment or position sensor drift.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Shift linkage out of adjustment
- Sensor drift
- Sensor element aged beyond calibration window
Symptoms
- Check engine or transmission warning light on
- Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
- Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
- Slipping or shuddering during gear changes
How to diagnose it
- Review freeze-frame data and compare commanded gear with the shift position reading to see which position or transition falls outside the expected range.
- Watch the position circuit's live data while selecting each gear and note readings that are out of sequence, unstable, or inconsistent with the command.
- Inspect the shift linkage and sensor mounting for looseness, misalignment, wear, or obstruction that could make feedback disagree with actual position.
- Check the sensor connector, reference, ground, and signal wiring for damage or poor contact.
- If linkage and wiring are sound, test the sensor's position response and adjustment against the manufacturer's specification.
Common fixes
- Adjust loose or misaligned shift linkage to restore agreement between selected and reported position.
- Secure or correctly align a loose position sensor mounting.
- Repair damaged sensor wiring or connector contacts.
- Replace the position sensor if its signal drifts outside the manufacturer's specification.
Can I keep driving?
If shifts remain predictable, drive only as needed for diagnosis and avoid heavy loads or rapid gear changes. Stop if the transmission slips or fails to engage, since repeated mismatched shifts can strain the mechanism.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
