OBD-II fault code

P0912: Gate Select Actuator Circuit Low

What it means

The gate select actuator circuit reports a low fault. Gate selection actuation is impaired. Wiring faults of this kind typically come from chafing, water ingress at connector seals, or pin push-back — a wiggle test on the harness while the code is active often confirms the location.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The gate select actuator moves the shift mechanism between gates, and the TCM monitors the actuator circuit's electrical level. This code sets when that level is lower than expected, commonly from a control wire shorted to ground, an internally shorted actuator coil, or corroded connector contacts.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Control wire shorted to ground
  2. Internal short in coil
  3. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and check live gate commands to see whether the low reading appears during actuator operation.
  2. Inspect the actuator harness and connector for chafing, water entry, corrosion, or a pin pushed back into the connector body.
  3. With the circuit isolated according to the manufacturer's procedure, check for a control wire short to ground and move the harness gently to expose an intermittent fault.
  4. Check actuator coil condition and circuit voltage drop against the manufacturer's specification to separate an internal short from poor connector contact.
  5. If wiring and actuator pass, inspect the TCM-side connection and output using the manufacturer's procedure.

Common fixes

  • Repair a gate select actuator wire shorted to ground.
  • Clean corroded connector pins and restore proper terminal contact.
  • Repair chafed or water-damaged wiring and reseal the connector as needed.
  • Replace the actuator if its coil is confirmed internally shorted.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid driving if shifts are harsh, delayed, or the transmission cannot select gates reliably; stop if it loses drive or enters limp mode. Continuing to operate a faulty actuator can worsen shift mechanism wear or leave the vehicle stuck in one gear.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
