OBD-II fault code

P0896: Shift Time Too Long

What it means

The transmission control module monitors how long a gear change takes and compares it with the expected shift time. It sets this code when a shift takes longer than the module allows.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The TCM times gear changes as it commands solenoids and hydraulic pressure to move clutches or other friction elements. P0896 sets when a shift takes longer than the module's allowed time, which can occur if a solenoid responds slowly or fluid is too viscous for the conditions.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Shift solenoid response slow
  2. Fluid viscosity too high

Symptoms

  • Transmission warning light or check-engine light may be on
  • Delayed or prolonged shifts
  • Transmission may enter a limited operating mode

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and note the gear change and temperature when it occurred; check for related solenoid, pressure, and gear-ratio codes.
  2. Use live data to compare commanded and actual gear and shift duration, noting whether the delay occurs on a specific shift or when the transmission is cold.
  3. Check the fluid level and condition using the manufacturer's procedure, and verify that the specified fluid type is in use.
  4. Inspect shift-solenoid connectors and wiring for corrosion, damage, or loose terminals.
  5. If the delay remains, test solenoid response and hydraulic pressure using the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure.

Common fixes

  • Correct low fluid level or address a leak using the specified procedure.
  • Service fluid that is degraded or incorrect, following the manufacturer's requirements.
  • Repair a poor solenoid connector or damaged wiring.
  • Replace a slow or failed shift solenoid confirmed by testing.
  • Repair a hydraulic pressure fault if diagnosis identifies one.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid towing, heavy loads, and hard acceleration if shifts are delayed or prolonged, because slipping during a slow shift can overheat and damage transmission parts. If the vehicle enters limited mode or loses drive, stop safely.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
