What it means
The transmission control module detects that a transmission component is slipping.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
Transmission clutches and other friction elements transfer engine torque through the selected gear. The TCM compares engine speed with transmission speed and the commanded gear, and sets P0894 when a component's speed suggests it is slipping instead of holding as expected.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Clutch friction surfaces worn
- Hydraulic pressure too low
Symptoms
- Transmission warning light or check-engine light may be on
- Engine speed may rise without a matching increase in vehicle speed
- Abnormal shifting
How to diagnose it
- Save freeze-frame data and note the gear and driving conditions when the slip was detected; check for related ratio, pressure, and solenoid codes.
- Use live data to compare engine, transmission input, and output speeds during a gentle, controlled drive to identify which shift or gear slips.
- Check for transmission fluid leaks and verify fluid level and condition using the manufacturer's procedure.
- Inspect accessible transmission wiring and connectors for faults that could cause incorrect clutch or gear control.
- If the slip is confirmed, test hydraulic pressure and control operation according to the manufacturer's procedure, then assess the implicated clutch or friction element.
Common fixes
- Repair a fluid leak and correct the fluid level using the specified procedure.
- Repair a wiring or connector fault affecting transmission control.
- Service or replace deteriorated fluid if the manufacturer's procedure supports it.
- Repair the failed hydraulic control or worn internal friction component confirmed by testing.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid towing, steep climbs, hard acceleration, and long trips while the transmission is slipping; engine speed rising without matching vehicle speed can quickly worsen internal damage. Stop driving if slipping becomes severe or drive is lost.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
