What it means
The transmission control module detects that a shift took less time than expected.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
The TCM controls shifts by coordinating hydraulic pressure and clutch or solenoid operation, then monitors how quickly the gear change completes. P0895 sets when a shift finishes sooner than the expected time, which may reflect control overshoot or excessive hydraulic pressure.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Shift control overshoot
- Hydraulic pressure too high
Symptoms
- Transmission warning light or check-engine light may be on
- Shift may feel unusually abrupt
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and identify the gear change associated with the code; check for related pressure-control or solenoid codes.
- Review live data for commanded gear, actual gear, and shift timing to determine whether the short shift occurs consistently in one transition.
- Check transmission fluid level and condition using the manufacturer's procedure, and look for signs of contamination or incorrect fluid.
- Inspect pressure-control and shift-solenoid wiring and connectors for damage or poor contact.
- If the abrupt shift persists, check pressure-control operation and hydraulic pressure against the manufacturer's diagnostic specification.
Common fixes
- Correct fluid level or condition according to the manufacturer's procedure.
- Repair a damaged connector or wiring fault in the shift or pressure-control circuit.
- Replace a faulty pressure-control or shift solenoid confirmed by testing.
- Repair the hydraulic control fault causing excessive pressure or shift overshoot.
Can I keep driving?
A single abrupt shift may allow a short, gentle trip, but avoid hard acceleration and heavy loads until the cause is checked. Repeated harsh shifts can stress transmission mounts and internal components.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
