What it means
The transmission control module detects that the transmission fluid has deteriorated, according to its monitoring strategy.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
Transmission fluid lubricates and cools internal parts and carries hydraulic force through the transmission. The TCM uses its fluid-deterioration monitoring strategy to estimate when the fluid has degraded, setting P0897 when that estimate reaches its threshold, often after overdue service or repeated heat stress.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Service interval overdue
- Repeated thermal stress
Symptoms
- Transmission warning light or check-engine light may be on
- Abnormal shifting may occur
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and check for related temperature or transmission-performance codes that may point to overheating.
- Review scan-tool fluid-life or deterioration data if the vehicle provides it, and compare it with the service history.
- Inspect for leaks and check fluid level and condition using the manufacturer's procedure; do not judge level from appearance alone.
- Look for evidence of repeated overheating, such as cooling-system problems or restricted transmission cooling, and follow the vehicle's inspection procedure.
- If fluid condition or shifting remains concerning, have the transmission and its cooling system checked for damage or an underlying cause.
Common fixes
- Perform the specified transmission fluid service if it is overdue and the manufacturer's procedure recommends it.
- Repair fluid leaks and set the level using the correct procedure.
- Correct a transmission cooling or overheating problem contributing to fluid deterioration.
- Repair internal transmission damage if inspection confirms it.
Can I keep driving?
If shifting is normal and the fluid service is simply overdue, arrange service soon and avoid heavy loads or towing in the meantime. If shifting becomes abnormal or the transmission overheats, stop driving to limit further damage.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
