OBD-II fault code

P0850: Park/Neutral Switch Input Circuit

What it means

The Park/Neutral switch input circuit has a fault. The controller may not receive a reliable Park/Neutral signal.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

The park/neutral switch input tells the control module whether the transmission is in Park or Neutral, information used for functions such as start authorization and transmission control. P0850 sets when the module detects a fault in that input circuit and cannot reliably receive the switch state.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. PNP switch failed
  2. Switch misaligned

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and compare scan-tool park/neutral status with the actual selector position in Park, Neutral, and other positions.
  2. Check whether starting is permitted only in the expected positions, with the parking brake applied and the vehicle secured.
  3. Inspect the PNP switch connector and harness for looseness, damage, corrosion, or signs the switch may have shifted.
  4. Check switch alignment and input circuit continuity according to the manufacturer's wiring diagram and selector-position procedure.
  5. If alignment and wiring are correct, test the PNP switch against the manufacturer's specifications.

Common fixes

  • Correct PNP switch alignment if it is out of position.
  • Reseat or repair the switch connector and wiring.
  • Replace the PNP switch if its input changes incorrectly during testing.
  • Clear the code and verify reported Park and Neutral states.

Can I keep driving?

If the vehicle starts or reports gears inconsistently, keep the parking brake applied and avoid driving until the selector signal is reliable; an incorrect state can affect starting or transmission control. Do not assume Park is recognized if the vehicle can move.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
