OBD-II fault code

P0792: Intermediate Shaft Speed Sensor A Circuit Range/Performance

What it means

The transmission control module detects that the intermediate shaft speed sensor A signal is outside its expected range or does not match expected performance.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

Intermediate shaft speed sensor A reports the intermediate shaft's rotation speed to the TCM for shift-slip calculations and torque converter control. This range/performance code sets when a signal is present but its speed or behavior falls outside the expected range or does not agree with other transmission data.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Aged Hall element with reduced amplitude
  2. Sensor element aged beyond calibration window
  3. Sensor mounting loose - signal damping

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and compare sensor A's live speed with other transmission speed readings during the gear and conditions that set the code.
  2. Inspect intermediate shaft speed sensor A for secure mounting and check its connector and wiring for damage, looseness, or contamination.
  3. Check the sensor A circuit and signal quality using the manufacturer's procedure to distinguish a weak or distorted signal from a wiring fault.
  4. Verify sensor A's mounting and air gap, where applicable, against the manufacturer's specification.
  5. If the circuit and mounting are correct, test sensor A and compare its output with the manufacturer's specification before replacing it.

Common fixes

  • Secure sensor A and correct its mounting or air gap if out of specification.
  • Repair a loose, corroded, or damaged sensor A connector or wiring.
  • Replace intermediate shaft speed sensor A if its signal remains outside specification.
  • Address a confirmed transmission condition affecting shaft speed only after sensor and circuit checks.

Can I keep driving?

Drive gently and avoid towing or hard acceleration until diagnosed, since inaccurate shaft-speed data can disrupt shift and torque converter control. Stop if you experience slipping, shuddering, or unpredictable shifts.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
