What it means
General electrical fault on the Normal/Performance shift-pattern selector switch — lets the driver toggle between a comfort-oriented and a sport-oriented shift map. Without a valid input the TCM defaults to the Normal map.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
The Normal/Performance selector switch tells the TCM which of two shift patterns the driver wants. This circuit malfunction code sets when the TCM receives an invalid electrical input from that selector, and the transmission may fall back to its normal shift map.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Faulty Normal/Performance selector switch
- Open or shorted switch wiring
- Loose, damaged, or corroded connector
- Fault in the transmission control module input circuit
Symptoms
- Check engine or transmission warning light on
- Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
- Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
- Slipping or shuddering during gear changes
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and check scan-tool switch status while selecting Normal and Performance to see whether the input changes correctly.
- Inspect the Normal/Performance switch and connector for damage, loose fit, or contamination.
- Check the switch wiring for an open, short, or corroded connection between the selector and TCM.
- Test the switch contacts and input circuit against the manufacturer's wiring diagram and specification.
- If the switch and wiring pass, check the TCM input circuit using the manufacturer's procedure.
Common fixes
- Repair or replace a faulty Normal/Performance selector switch.
- Clean or repair a loose or corroded switch connector.
- Repair open or shorted wiring in the selector circuit.
- Repair a confirmed TCM input fault after verifying the switch and wiring.
Can I keep driving?
You can usually drive gently if the transmission shifts normally, but do not rely on the selected Performance or Normal pattern until the input is repaired. Stop if shifting becomes harsh, slipping, or unpredictable.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
