What it means
The TCM detects an electrical fault on the intermediate shaft speed sensor A circuit. Used to compute shift slip and torque converter behavior.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
Intermediate shaft speed sensor A measures the rotation speed of the transmission's intermediate shaft so the TCM can calculate shift slip and manage torque converter operation. This circuit code sets when the sensor A electrical signal is missing or faulty, rather than simply reporting a plausible but inaccurate speed.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Speed sensor failed
- Wiring open or shorted
Symptoms
- Check engine or transmission warning light on
- Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
- Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
- Slipping or shuddering during gear changes
How to diagnose it
- Save freeze-frame data and compare intermediate shaft speed sensor A live data with other transmission speed readings to see whether its signal is absent or erratic.
- Inspect sensor A's connector and wiring at the transmission for damage, looseness, corrosion, or fluid intrusion.
- Check the sensor A circuit for opens, shorts, and sound connections using the manufacturer's wiring diagram.
- Test sensor A's power, ground, and signal as applicable for its design, following the manufacturer's procedure.
- If the circuit checks pass, test or replace sensor A only after confirming its signal fails the manufacturer's specification.
Common fixes
- Reconnect or clean a loose or corroded sensor A connector.
- Repair open or shorted wiring in the intermediate shaft speed sensor A circuit.
- Replace intermediate shaft speed sensor A if its signal or electrical test fails.
- Repair a confirmed TCM input fault after the sensor and wiring have been ruled out.
Can I keep driving?
Limit driving and avoid towing or hard acceleration because the TCM may not control shifts or torque converter operation correctly. Stop if the transmission slips, shifts unpredictably, or enters a restricted operating mode.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
