OBD-II fault code

P0784: 4-5 Shift Malfunction

What it means

The TCM detects a fault during the 4-to-5 upshift on transmissions equipped with five or more forward gears.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

On a transmission with a fifth or higher forward gear, the TCM checks speed signals during the 4-to-5 upshift to verify the expected fifth-gear ratio. P0784 sets when that ratio is not reached after the shift command, which may involve the shift control or the 4-5 clutch.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Shift solenoid faulty
  2. 4-5 clutch slipping

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Check freeze-frame data and related codes to confirm that the fault occurred during a 4-to-5 shift on a transmission equipped with that gear.
  2. Check fluid level and condition using the manufacturer’s procedure.
  3. Inspect transmission wiring and connectors for damage or poor contact, focusing on shift-solenoid connections if related codes are present.
  4. Use live data during a controlled shift to compare commanded gear with input and output speeds as the transmission moves from fourth to fifth.
  5. Test the relevant shift solenoid and 4-5 hydraulic pressure against the manufacturer’s specifications.
  6. If electrical and pressure checks pass, inspect the 4-5 clutch and related hydraulic passages for wear or leakage.

Common fixes

  • Correct the fluid level or replace degraded fluid with the specified type and procedure.
  • Repair damaged wiring or loose, corroded shift-solenoid connections.
  • Replace a shift solenoid that fails electrical or functional testing.
  • Repair a valve body or hydraulic fault affecting the 4-5 shift.
  • Repair or replace the 4-5 clutch if inspection confirms it is worn or damaged.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid towing or hard acceleration if the transmission slips during the 4-to-5 shift; continued slipping can overheat and damage the 4-5 clutch. If the vehicle loses drive or enters limp mode, stop safely and arrange assistance.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
