What it means
The TCM detects that a commanded shift between gears did not occur within the expected time and quality window. Slip rates or speed ratios remain implausible during shift.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The TCM monitors transmission speed sensors and shift response to check whether a commanded gear change completes within its expected time and ratio. P0780 sets when the shift response is too slow, slips, or otherwise fails the module’s shift-quality checks, without identifying one particular gear change.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Low or degraded transmission fluid
- Shift solenoid stuck or worn
- Clutch pack wear
Symptoms
- Check engine or transmission warning light on
- Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
- Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
- Slipping or shuddering during gear changes
How to diagnose it
- Read freeze-frame data and transmission codes to see the operating conditions and whether a more specific gear or solenoid fault is also stored.
- Check the fluid level and condition according to the manufacturer’s procedure, since low or degraded fluid can affect several shifts.
- Inspect transmission wiring and connectors for damage, loose connections, corrosion, or fluid intrusion.
- Use live data to compare commanded gear with input and output speeds during a controlled shift, and note when the ratio deviates.
- Test shift-solenoid operation and hydraulic pressure according to the manufacturer’s specifications if the data points to a control or pressure problem.
- If electrical and hydraulic checks pass, inspect the relevant clutch packs and internal passages for wear or leakage.
Common fixes
- Correct the fluid level or replace degraded fluid with the specified type and procedure.
- Repair damaged transmission wiring or clean and secure poor connector contacts.
- Replace or repair a shift solenoid that fails its electrical or functional test.
- Repair internal pressure leakage or replace worn clutch components if inspection confirms damage.
Can I keep driving?
Limit driving if shifts are harsh, delayed, or slipping, and avoid towing or hard acceleration; continued slipping can overheat and damage the transmission. If limp mode engages or the vehicle cannot shift predictably, stop in a safe place and arrange assistance.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
