OBD-II fault code

P07DA: 6-7 Shift

What it means

The transmission control module detected a fault during a 6-to-7 shift. The code does not identify a specific failed part.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

During a commanded shift from 6th to 7th gear, the TCM checks transmission speed changes and shift timing to confirm the transition completed as expected. This code records a fault during that specific shift, but does not identify which solenoid, hydraulic passage, or friction element caused it.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Worn or damaged 7th-gear friction element
  2. Low or degraded transmission fluid
  3. Hydraulic pressure loss or valve body fault
  4. Shift solenoid sticking or malfunctioning
  5. Internal transmission wear or damage

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and check commanded gear, actual gear, shift timing, and related transmission codes to establish the conditions during the 6-to-7 shift.
  2. Check fluid level and condition by the manufacturer’s procedure, and inspect for leaks that could affect pressure during the shift.
  3. Inspect transmission wiring and connectors, especially circuits serving the shift solenoids and speed sensors, for damage or poor connections.
  4. Use live data during a safe road test to see whether the TCM commands 7th gear and whether the speed readings show a delayed, incomplete, or slipping transition.
  5. If the electrical signals appear normal, test solenoid operation and hydraulic pressure using manufacturer procedures before assessing the 7th-gear friction element.

Common fixes

  • Repair any fluid leak and set the fluid level to the manufacturer’s specification.
  • Replace degraded or incorrect fluid when supported by the service history and specified procedure.
  • Repair damaged wiring or connector faults in the shift-solenoid or speed-sensor circuits.
  • Replace a shift solenoid confirmed faulty by circuit and operation tests.
  • Repair the valve body or worn 7th-gear friction element if hydraulic or internal testing confirms the fault.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid driving if the 6-to-7 shift slips badly, causes severe shudder, or leaves the vehicle in limp mode; continued operation can increase transmission damage. If symptoms are mild, drive gently and avoid towing or hard acceleration while arranging diagnosis.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
