OBD-II fault code

P0783: 3-4 Shift Malfunction

What it means

The TCM detects a fault during the 3-to-4 upshift, where gear ratio after the shift does not match fourth gear expected value.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

During the 3-to-4 upshift, the TCM uses transmission speed signals to check whether the gearbox reaches the expected fourth-gear ratio. P0783 sets when the ratio after that shift command is wrong, which can point to a shift-control fault or slipping 3-4 clutch.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Shift solenoid faulty
  2. 3-4 clutch slipping

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Review freeze-frame data and other transmission codes to confirm the fault occurred during the 3-to-4 upshift.
  2. Check the fluid level and condition using the manufacturer’s procedure; low or degraded fluid can impair the 3-4 shift.
  3. Inspect transmission wiring and connectors, including the shift-solenoid connections, for damage, corrosion, or loose pins.
  4. Compare commanded gear and input/output speeds in live data during a controlled 3-to-4 shift to identify whether the ratio changes late or slips.
  5. Test the relevant shift solenoid and 3-4 hydraulic pressure against the manufacturer’s specifications.
  6. If control and pressure checks pass, inspect the 3-4 clutch and internal passages for wear or leakage.

Common fixes

  • Correct the fluid level or replace degraded fluid with the specified type and procedure.
  • Repair damaged wiring or poor connections in the shift-solenoid circuit.
  • Replace a shift solenoid that fails its electrical or functional test.
  • Repair a valve body or hydraulic pressure fault affecting the 3-4 shift.
  • Repair or replace the 3-4 clutch if inspection confirms wear or damage.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid towing and hard acceleration if it slips or shifts harshly from third to fourth; continued slipping can overheat the transmission and damage the 3-4 clutch. If it loses drive or shifts unpredictably, stop safely and arrange assistance.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
