What it means
Cooling Fan 2 Control Circuit High: the control-circuit voltage is above the expected range. Reduced cooling-fan control can let the engine or A/C condenser overheat.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
The engine controller monitors the control circuit for Cooling Fan 2, which is distinct from the Fan 1 circuit. P0694 sets when the Fan 2 control voltage is higher than expected, often because its control wire is shorted to power or the Fan 2 relay circuit has a fault.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Fan 2 relay defective
- Wiring shorted to power
- Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
Symptoms
- Cooling fan may not operate as commanded
- Engine or A/C condenser may overheat
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and review coolant temperature, A/C request, and Fan 2 command data to see when the circuit fault occurred.
- Inspect the Fan 2 wiring, connector, and relay socket for corrosion, pushed-back pins, pinched insulation, or contact with a power feed.
- Command Fan 2 with a scan tool if supported and observe its operation separately from Fan 1.
- Test the Fan 2 relay and associated control connections according to the wiring diagram and the manufacturer's procedure.
- Check for an unintended connection from the Fan 2 control wire to supply voltage, then verify controller output using the specified method.
Common fixes
- Clean and secure corroded Fan 2 connector or relay-socket terminals.
- Repair wiring pinched against a power feed.
- Repair a Fan 2 control wire shorted to supply.
- Replace the Fan 2 relay if it fails the specified test.
Can I keep driving?
If the engine temperature remains normal, limit driving and watch the temperature gauge closely, particularly in traffic or with the A/C on. Stop safely if it begins to overheat to prevent engine damage.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
