OBD-II fault code

P0692: Cooling Fan 1 Control Circuit High

What it means

Cooling Fan 1 Control Circuit High: the control-circuit voltage is above the expected range. Reduced cooling-fan control can let the engine or A/C condenser overheat.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

The engine controller monitors the control circuit for Cooling Fan 1 and checks whether its voltage is within the expected range. P0692 sets when that voltage is too high, which can result from a control wire shorted to power or a fault in the Fan 1 relay circuit.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Fan relay defective
  2. Wiring shorted to power
  3. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance

Symptoms

  • Cooling fan may not operate as commanded
  • Engine or A/C condenser may overheat

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and review coolant temperature, A/C request, and Fan 1 command data to determine the operating condition when the code set.
  2. Inspect Fan 1 wiring, connectors, relay socket, and the control wire for pinched insulation, corrosion, or contact with a power feed.
  3. Command Fan 1 with a scan tool if supported and note whether the fan responds as expected or the circuit fault returns.
  4. Check the Fan 1 relay and its control connections using the vehicle wiring diagram and the manufacturer's procedure.
  5. Test the control wire for an unintended connection to supply voltage and confirm controller output only by the specified method.

Common fixes

  • Clean and secure corroded Fan 1 connector or relay-socket terminals.
  • Repair wiring pinched against a power feed.
  • Repair a Fan 1 control wire shorted to supply.
  • Replace the Fan 1 relay if it fails the specified test.

Can I keep driving?

Do not continue driving if the engine overheats or the temperature gauge climbs; turn off the A/C and stop safely. A cooling fault can lead to engine damage if overheating continues.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
