What it means
Cooling Fan 2 Control Circuit: the control circuit has an electrical fault. Reduced cooling-fan control can let the engine or A/C condenser overheat.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
Cooling fan 2 provides additional airflow through the radiator and A/C condenser when the cooling system needs it. The control module monitors fan 2’s control circuit and sets P0481 when it detects an electrical fault that may stop fan 2 from running when commanded.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Fan 2 relay failure
- Fan 2 motor failure
- Open or short in the control wiring
- Corroded or loose connector
Symptoms
- Check-engine light on
- Engine temperature may rise, especially at low speeds or while idling
- Air conditioning may cool poorly when stopped
- Cooling fan may not run when expected
How to diagnose it
- Check freeze-frame data and live engine temperature, then confirm whether fan 2 is commanded on under the recorded conditions.
- With the engine off, inspect fan 2’s connector, wiring, and blades for damage, looseness, or obstruction.
- Check the fan 2 fuse and relay using the vehicle’s wiring diagram and manufacturer’s procedure.
- Test fan 2’s motor and control wiring for an open, short, poor connection, or failed motor according to the manufacturer’s specification.
- If fan 2 and its circuit pass testing, check the module command and related control inputs.
Common fixes
- Reconnect or repair a loose or corroded fan 2 connector.
- Replace a failed fan 2 relay or fuse after checking for the cause.
- Repair open, shorted, or damaged fan 2 control wiring.
- Replace the fan 2 motor if it fails testing.
Can I keep driving?
Monitor engine temperature and avoid idling, slow traffic, or using the A/C if the temperature climbs. Stop safely if the engine overheats to prevent serious damage.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
