OBD-II fault code

P0693: Cooling Fan 2 Control Circuit Low

What it means

Cooling Fan 2 Control Circuit Low: the control-circuit voltage is below the expected range. Reduced cooling-fan control can let the engine or A/C condenser overheat.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

The engine controller monitors the control circuit for Cooling Fan 2, a separate fan from Fan 1 that may assist engine or condenser cooling. P0693 sets when Fan 2's control voltage is below the expected range, often due to a grounded control wire or a fault in the Fan 2 relay circuit.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Fan 2 relay defective
  2. Wiring shorted to ground
  3. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance

Symptoms

  • Cooling fan may not operate as commanded
  • Engine or A/C condenser may overheat

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and check coolant temperature, A/C request, and Fan 2 command data to establish whether the controller was asking Fan 2 to run.
  2. Inspect the Fan 2 connector, relay socket, wiring, and ground-side control wire for corrosion, loose pins, or insulation touching ground.
  3. Use scan-tool output controls, if available, to command Fan 2 and observe its response separately from Fan 1.
  4. Test the Fan 2 relay and control circuit using the vehicle wiring diagram and the manufacturer's procedure.
  5. Check the Fan 2 control wire for a short to ground and verify the controller output only as directed by the manufacturer.

Common fixes

  • Clean and secure corroded Fan 2 connector or relay-socket terminals.
  • Repair a Fan 2 control wire shorted to ground.
  • Repair chafed or damaged wiring in the Fan 2 circuit.
  • Replace the Fan 2 relay if it fails the specified test.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid driving if the temperature gauge rises or the engine overheats, especially in slow traffic or with the A/C on. Stop safely if temperatures climb, since loss of Fan 2 cooling can contribute to engine overheating.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
