What it means
Same as P0645 with the control line shorted to supply. Wiring faults of this kind typically come from chafing, water ingress at connector seals, or pin push-back — a wiggle test on the harness while the code is active often confirms the location.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
The control module operates the A/C clutch relay control circuit to engage the compressor when cooling is requested. P0647 sets when that control line is above its expected voltage, often because it is shorted to a power supply, which can prevent correct relay operation.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Control line shorted to supply
- Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
- Supply wire pinched against B+ source
Symptoms
- Air conditioning may not operate
How to diagnose it
- Use scan-tool data to check the A/C request and relay command, and observe whether the clutch follows the command.
- Inspect the relay-control wire, relay socket, and nearby harness for pinching, chafing against a power feed, water ingress, or damaged terminals.
- Measure the control-line voltage during an A/C command and compare it with the manufacturer's specification.
- Check for a short from the control line to a higher-voltage supply using the manufacturer's circuit-isolation procedure, moving the harness gently while monitoring the circuit.
- If external wiring is sound, test the relay and module control driver according to the manufacturer's procedure.
Common fixes
- Repair a control wire shorted to a power supply and secure it away from the feed.
- Replace damaged insulation or a pinched harness section.
- Clean or replace corroded or pushed-back relay connector terminals.
- Replace the A/C clutch relay if it fails testing.
- Repair the module control driver only after external shorts and relay faults are ruled out.
Can I keep driving?
The A/C may not operate correctly, but the vehicle is generally driveable without cooling. If the compressor remains engaged unexpectedly or wiring heats up, switch off the A/C and have the fault checked promptly.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
