OBD-II fault code

P0649: Speed Control Lamp Control Circuit

What it means

Speed Control Lamp Control Circuit: the control circuit has an electrical fault.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

The speed-control lamp circuit switches the cruise or other speed-control warning or status lamp, usually through the instrument cluster. This code sets when the controlling module detects an electrical fault in the circuit that operates that lamp; it does not by itself prove that speed control has failed.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Open or short in speed-control lamp wiring
  2. Faulty warning lamp or instrument-cluster circuit
  3. Poor connector contact or ground
  4. Fault in the control module’s lamp driver

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Possible limp mode or no-start
  • Multiple follow-up faults across modules
  • Reset/relearn may be needed after repair

How to diagnose it

  1. Scan all modules and record freeze-frame data plus cruise-control and cluster codes to identify related faults.
  2. Check whether the speed-control lamp illuminates during its normal self-check and whether it changes when speed control is switched on.
  3. Inspect the speed-control lamp wiring and connectors at the cluster and controlling module for damage, corrosion, loose pins, or poor ground.
  4. Use a scan tool's output controls, if available, to command the speed-control lamp and observe whether the cluster responds.
  5. Test the lamp-control circuit for opens, shorts, and poor connections, comparing readings with the manufacturer's specification.
  6. If the wiring and cluster circuit pass, investigate a control-module lamp-driver or software fault.

Common fixes

  • Secure or clean a loose, corroded speed-control lamp connector or ground.
  • Repair an open or short in the speed-control lamp wiring.
  • Repair the instrument-cluster lamp circuit or replace a failed lamp where serviceable.
  • Repair or replace the control module if its lamp driver is faulty after circuit checks.

Can I keep driving?

If speed control operates normally, the code may affect only its status lamp, but you will have less indication that the system is active. Do not use cruise control if its operation or status is uncertain, and stop using it if the vehicle's speed response becomes unpredictable.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
