What it means
Same as P0645 with the control line shorted to ground. Wiring faults of this kind typically come from chafing, water ingress at connector seals, or pin push-back — a wiggle test on the harness while the code is active often confirms the location.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
The control module switches the A/C clutch relay through its control circuit to engage the compressor when cooling is requested. P0646 sets when the relay-control line is held below its expected voltage, commonly by a short to ground, and the clutch may not engage as commanded.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Control line shorted to ground
- Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
- Harness chafing through insulation
Symptoms
- Air conditioning may not operate
How to diagnose it
- Check scan-tool data for the A/C request and relay command, and confirm whether the clutch engages while the fault is present.
- Inspect the relay-control wire, relay socket, and connectors for chafing, crushed insulation, moisture, or corrosion, especially where the harness moves.
- Measure the control-line voltage and compare it with the manufacturer's specification while commanding the A/C relay.
- With the circuit safely de-energized as specified by the manufacturer, test the control wire for a short to ground and move the harness gently to expose an intermittent short.
- If wiring is clear, test the relay coil and module control driver against the manufacturer's procedure.
Common fixes
- Repair chafed insulation or a control wire shorted to ground.
- Clean or replace corroded relay-socket and connector terminals.
- Repair a damaged relay socket or harness section.
- Replace a faulty A/C clutch relay if it fails testing.
- Repair the module control driver only after confirming the external circuit is not grounded.
Can I keep driving?
The A/C may not cool, but the vehicle is generally driveable without it. Stop using the A/C if wiring or the relay becomes hot, and have a stuck or abnormal compressor operation checked promptly.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
