OBD-II fault code

P0645: A/C Clutch Relay Control Circuit

What it means

A general circuit fault on the A/C clutch relay control - the line over which the ECU engages the magnetic clutch to drive the A/C compressor.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

The control module operates the A/C clutch relay control circuit to engage the compressor's magnetic clutch when cooling is requested and operating conditions allow it. P0645 sets when the module detects a general electrical fault in that relay-control circuit, so the compressor may not engage.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Open or short in A/C clutch relay-control wiring
  2. Faulty A/C clutch relay
  3. Poor connector contact or relay power supply
  4. Fault in the control module’s relay driver

Symptoms

  • Air conditioning may not operate

How to diagnose it

  1. Confirm the A/C cooling request and note freeze-frame or scan-tool data showing whether the module commanded the clutch relay.
  2. Inspect the A/C clutch relay, fuse, relay socket, and control wiring for looseness, corrosion, overheating, or damage.
  3. Check relay power, ground, and control circuit continuity against the manufacturer's wiring information.
  4. Test the relay and its output while the A/C is commanded on, following the manufacturer's procedure.
  5. If power, relay, and wiring are sound, verify the module command and control driver before considering a module fault.

Common fixes

  • Repair a loose or corroded relay-socket or wiring connection.
  • Replace a failed A/C clutch relay after checking its supply and load circuit.
  • Replace a blown fuse only after checking for a short or excessive load.
  • Repair an open or shorted relay-control wire.
  • Repair the module driver only after confirming the relay circuit and compressor load are sound.

Can I keep driving?

This fault usually affects cabin cooling rather than basic drivability, so driving is generally possible without A/C. Avoid using the A/C if the relay or wiring is overheating, and have the circuit repaired if the compressor fails to disengage or produces unusual noise.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
