OBD-II fault code

P0644: Driver Display Serial Communication Circuit

What it means

The serial communication line to the driver display (instrument cluster, MIL/check-engine warning) shows a circuit fault. Driver may not see warning lights as expected.

How it works

The driver display communication circuit carries information used by the instrument cluster, including warning indications, with the precise network design varying by vehicle. P0644 sets when the control module detects a fault on this serial communication path, so display messages or warning lights may not be delivered correctly.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Harness or driver fault
  2. Gateway module routing CAN messages incorrectly
  3. CAN terminating resistor (120 Ω) drifted out of spec

Symptoms

  • Driver display or related warning indication may not operate correctly

How to diagnose it

  1. Note which cluster functions or warning indications fail, and scan all modules for communication codes that identify the affected network or display.
  2. Inspect the instrument-cluster and gateway connectors and accessible harness sections for looseness, corrosion, water ingress, or damage.
  3. Use the wiring diagram to check network continuity and shorts on the specific display communication circuit against the manufacturer's procedure.
  4. Check network termination only if the vehicle's service information specifies it for this circuit, and compare the result with the manufacturer's specification.
  5. If wiring and connections test correctly, verify gateway routing and cluster communication with a capable scan tool before considering module faults.

Common fixes

  • Reconnect or repair a loose or corroded cluster or gateway connector.
  • Repair damaged communication wiring or a short on the display circuit.
  • Correct a network termination fault if testing confirms it is outside specification.
  • Repair gateway configuration or routing if the vehicle's service procedure identifies it as the cause.
  • Repair or replace a faulty cluster or gateway only after network wiring tests pass.

Can I keep driving?

The vehicle may remain driveable, but you may not see warning lights or messages that normally appear on the driver display. Pay attention to abnormal vehicle behavior and arrange repair promptly, especially if brake, temperature, or other safety warnings are unavailable.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
