OBD-II fault code

P0642: Sensor Reference Voltage A Circuit Low

What it means

The 5 V reference voltage on the A circuit (used by multiple sensors) is below threshold — short to ground or excessive current draw by a single sensor pulling the rail down.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The control module provides a nominal 5-volt reference on sensor circuit A for one or more sensors, with the exact sensor group depending on the vehicle. P0642 sets when that reference voltage is below the allowed range, often because a sensor or wire is pulling the shared supply down.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Sensor or harness shorted to ground
  2. ECU reference output damaged
  3. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Possible limp mode or no-start
  • Multiple follow-up faults across modules
  • Reset/relearn may be needed after repair

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and scan for related sensor codes; several implausible readings together can point to the shared reference-A rail.
  2. Inspect the reference-A harness and connected sensor plugs for chafing, moisture, corrosion, or damaged terminals.
  3. Measure reference A at the affected sensor connector and compare it with the manufacturer's specification to confirm the low supply.
  4. Test the circuit for a short to ground and isolate sensor branches one at a time using the manufacturer's procedure to find a component pulling the rail down.
  5. If the reference stays low with sensor branches and wiring cleared, test the module output and connector for damage before condemning the module.

Common fixes

  • Repair a chafed reference-A wire or short to ground.
  • Clean or repair corroded or loose connector pins causing poor contact.
  • Replace the sensor that pulls reference A low after branch isolation confirms it.
  • Repair a damaged harness splice or module connector.
  • Replace or repair the control module only if its reference output remains below specification with external circuits sound.

Can I keep driving?

The low shared reference can affect several sensors at once and cause limp mode, rough running, or a no-start. Avoid driving if engine or transmission control is impaired, since stalling or loss of predictable response is possible.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
