OBD-II fault code

P0609: Control Module VSS Output B

What it means

A fault has been detected in control module vehicle-speed output B. The code does not identify the affected receiving system or prove that the output disagrees with an internal speed value.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

The control module provides vehicle-speed output B as a speed signal for connected vehicle systems. P0609 sets when a fault is detected in this B output path, which can involve the module's output driver or its wiring and connections.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Fault in the module’s vehicle-speed output driver
  2. Open, shorted, or high-resistance output wiring
  3. Poor connector contact or module ground
  4. Low or unstable control-module supply voltage

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Possible limp mode or no-start
  • Multiple follow-up faults across modules
  • Reset/relearn may be needed after repair

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and scan all modules for vehicle-speed or communication faults that may identify a system using output B.
  2. Compare scan-tool vehicle-speed data with a safe road-speed reading and note any affected speed-dependent functions.
  3. Use the vehicle wiring information to locate output B, then inspect its harness and connectors for corrosion, loose terminals, or damage.
  4. Test output B wiring for an open, short, or excessive resistance and verify the signal along the circuit according to the manufacturer's procedure.
  5. Check module supply voltage and ground if the signal is unstable, then assess the output B driver if the circuit tests correctly.

Common fixes

  • Repair an open, short, or damaged wire in the output B circuit.
  • Clean and secure poor output B connector contacts or module grounds.
  • Correct unstable module supply voltage if present.
  • Replace and configure the module if its vehicle-speed output B driver is confirmed faulty.

Can I keep driving?

Limit driving if speed-dependent systems are affected, and do not rely on cruise control or features whose operation depends on the output B signal. Stop if the speedometer or transmission behavior becomes unreliable.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
