OBD-II fault code

P0607: Control Module Performance

What it means

The ECM performs an internal self-test and detects a processor or memory performance fault that does not fit the more specific P0601 to P0606 codes.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The engine control module (ECM) checks its own processor and memory performance while it manages engine operation. P0607 sets when that self-check finds a general performance fault that does not fit the more specific internal memory codes; unstable voltage, software, or an ECM fault may be responsible.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. ECM internal performance fault
  2. Unstable supply voltage
  3. Module software outdated, reflash may resolve

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Possible limp mode or no-start
  • Multiple follow-up faults across modules
  • Reset/relearn may be needed after repair

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and scan every module for related faults, paying attention to low-voltage and communication codes.
  2. Check battery and charging-system condition, then inspect ECM power and ground connections for looseness or corrosion.
  3. Inspect the ECM connectors and harness for damaged wires, moisture, or poor terminal contact.
  4. Check the manufacturer's service information for software updates or known calibration requirements for the ECM.
  5. If P0607 returns after power and software checks, test ECM supply circuits under operating conditions to specification and assess for an internal performance fault.

Common fixes

  • Repair poor ECM power, ground, connector, or harness connections.
  • Correct battery or charging-system problems causing unstable voltage.
  • Reprogram the ECM if an applicable update is specified.
  • Replace and configure the ECM if its internal performance fault is confirmed.

Can I keep driving?

With normal operation and a steady warning light, keep driving limited and avoid demanding trips because limp mode or a no-start may develop. Stop if the engine stalls, runs erratically, or loses power.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
