OBD-II fault code

P0608: Control Module VSS Output A

What it means

A fault has been detected in control module vehicle-speed output A. The code does not identify the affected receiving system or prove that the output is absent.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

The control module provides vehicle-speed output A so connected vehicle systems can use a speed signal. P0608 sets when the module detects a fault associated with this output; it does not by itself show which receiving system is affected or prove the signal is absent.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. ECM output stage fault
  2. Signal path to consumers faulty

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Possible limp mode or no-start
  • Multiple follow-up faults across modules
  • Reset/relearn may be needed after repair

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and scan all modules for vehicle-speed, communication, or receiving-system faults that could identify which systems use output A.
  2. Compare scan-tool vehicle-speed data with a safe road-speed reading to see whether the module's reported speed is plausible.
  3. Use the wiring information for the vehicle to locate output A and inspect its connector, harness routing, and grounds for damage or poor contact.
  4. Check the output A circuit for opens, shorts, or high resistance and verify the signal at the module and relevant connection points using the manufacturer's procedure.
  5. If the wiring and connections are sound but output A remains faulty, evaluate the module's output driver.

Common fixes

  • Repair damaged or poorly connected wiring in the vehicle-speed output A path.
  • Clean and secure affected connectors and grounds.
  • Repair a confirmed short or open in the output A circuit.
  • Replace and configure the control module if its output A driver is confirmed faulty.

Can I keep driving?

If speed-related systems behave normally, a short cautious trip may be possible, but avoid relying on cruise control or other features that depend on vehicle speed until checked. Stop if the speedometer, transmission behavior, or other speed-dependent functions become unreliable.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
