OBD-II fault code

P05A8: Active Grille Air Shutter A Supply Voltage Circuit High

What it means

Same as P05A6 with supply voltage above the plausible range. Wiring faults of this kind typically come from chafing, water ingress at connector seals, or pin push-back — a wiggle test on the harness while the code is active often confirms the location.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

The active grille air shutter system uses front-end shutters to regulate airflow for engine cooling and aerodynamics. The control module monitors the supply voltage for shutter circuit A and sets P05A8 when it rises above the plausible range, potentially causing the shutters to stop or remain in one position.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Supply voltage above design range
  2. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
  3. Supply wire pinched against B+ source

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light
  • Active grille shutter warning, if equipped
  • Shutters may stop moving or remain in one position

How to diagnose it

  1. Review freeze-frame and live data to confirm the circuit A supply is high and note whether the shutters respond to commands.
  2. Inspect circuit A's connector and harness for a pinched supply wire, chafing, moisture, corrosion, or terminals pushed out of position.
  3. With the fault active, monitor circuit A while gently moving the harness to see whether the high reading changes.
  4. Measure the supply and check for an unintended connection to battery positive, comparing results with the manufacturer's specification.
  5. If the wiring is intact, test the shutter actuator or control module circuit using the vehicle's wiring information.

Common fixes

  • Free a pinched circuit A supply wire from any battery-positive source.
  • Clean and secure corroded or loose connector terminals.
  • Repair chafed wiring and restore its insulation and routing.
  • Replace a failed actuator or related module only after verifying the circuit is not shorted to battery positive.

Can I keep driving?

A short drive may be possible if engine temperature remains normal and the shutters are not blocking needed cooling airflow. Avoid heavy loads and hot conditions, monitor the temperature gauge, and stop if the engine overheats.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
