What it means
Active grille air shutter D stays in the open position when commanded to close. Aerodynamic drag and warm-up time are affected.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
Active grille shutter D is the fourth identified movable airflow panel in the grille system. The control module compares its commanded position with its response and sets this code when D remains open after a close command. An open shutter can increase drag and slow engine warm-up.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Shutter actuator mechanically stuck
- Linkage iced or jammed
- Carbon or debris buildup preventing free movement
Symptoms
- Check-engine light
- Reduced fuel economy
- Longer engine warm-up time
How to diagnose it
- Check freeze-frame data and shutter commands to confirm the fault occurred while shutter D was being told to close.
- With the engine off and cool, inspect shutter D and its linkage for ice, dirt, damage, or an obstruction holding it open.
- Check that shutter D's blades and linkage move freely by hand only if the manufacturer's procedure permits it.
- Inspect the D actuator connector and wiring for damage, water, corrosion, or loose terminals.
- Use a scan tool to command shutter D through its positions and compare its reported position and movement with the other shutters and the manufacturer's specification.
Common fixes
- Remove ice or debris blocking shutter D.
- Clean buildup that prevents shutter D or its linkage from moving freely.
- Repair damaged or loose wiring and connector terminals for shutter D.
- Replace the shutter D actuator if it is mechanically stuck or fails its commanded movement test.
Can I keep driving?
If the only symptom is a warning light, short, gentle trips are generally possible, but expect slower warm-up and possibly worse fuel economy. Avoid driving if the shutter assembly is loose or obstructs airflow, or if the engine begins to overheat.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
