OBD-II fault code

P0590: Cruise Control Multi-Function Input B Circuit Stuck

What it means

Cruise Control Multi-Function Input B Circuit Stuck: an electrical fault is present in the circuit. This affects cruise-control operation.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

The cruise-control module reads input B from the multifunction switch or stalk to identify a driver's command. This code sets when that input remains stuck in one state instead of changing as expected, including when the control is released.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Cruise-control button or stalk mechanically stuck
  2. Damaged or corroded switch connections
  3. Wiring fault
  4. Fault in the cruise-control module

Symptoms

  • Cruise-control buttons may not respond or may act as if pressed
  • Cruise control may be unavailable or disengage
  • Check-engine light

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and watch the cruise-control input B state on a scan tool while pressing and releasing the relevant switch.
  2. Check that the switch or stalk moves freely and returns fully after each press.
  3. Inspect the switch connector and nearby wiring for corrosion, trapped wires, shorts, or damaged terminals.
  4. With the wiring diagram, test the input B circuit for a persistent short or open using the manufacturer's procedure.
  5. If the switch and wiring operate correctly, check the cruise-control module's connector and input response before replacing it.

Common fixes

  • Free a mechanically stuck button or stalk if it can be safely restored.
  • Clean and secure the switch connector or repair its terminals.
  • Repair a shorted or damaged section of input B wiring.
  • Replace the faulty cruise-control switch or stalk.
  • Repair or replace the cruise-control module if its input remains stuck with a verified good circuit.

Can I keep driving?

You can generally drive with cruise control switched off, but do not use it while the input is stuck or behaving unpredictably. Keep control of the vehicle's speed manually and have the fault checked if cruise control engages or disengages unexpectedly.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
