OBD-II fault code

P058F: Battery Monitor Module Temperature Too Low

What it means

Same as P058E with the temperature below the safe lower threshold - charging current is reduced to prevent damage to a frozen battery.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

The battery monitor module tracks battery temperature so charging can be adjusted in cold conditions. This code sets when the reported battery temperature falls below the system's lower limit, which can reduce charging to protect a very cold or frozen battery.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Very low ambient temperature
  2. Battery temperature sensor fault
  3. Loose, corroded, or damaged sensor connections
  4. Battery-monitor module fault

Symptoms

  • Battery or charging warning light may appear
  • Charging may be limited
  • Start-stop system may be unavailable

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and compare the scan-tool battery-temperature reading with the actual ambient conditions around the battery.
  2. Inspect the battery for signs of freezing or damage, especially after prolonged exposure to very low temperatures.
  3. Check that the temperature sensor is correctly mounted and that its connector is secure and free of corrosion.
  4. Inspect the sensor wiring for breaks, chafing, loose terminals, or poor contact and compare its signal with the manufacturer's specification.
  5. If the sensor and wiring pass, follow the manufacturer's procedure to test the battery monitor module's temperature input.

Common fixes

  • Warm a cold battery safely in suitable conditions before expecting normal charging behavior.
  • Reconnect or correctly position the temperature sensor and secure its connector.
  • Repair damaged temperature-sensor wiring or connector terminals.
  • Replace a faulty temperature sensor or battery monitor module if it fails the manufacturer's checks.

Can I keep driving?

In very cold weather, starting and charging may be limited, so avoid relying on the vehicle for a long trip until the battery is checked. Do not charge or use a battery that may be frozen or physically damaged.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
