What it means
The power steering pressure sensor signal is intermittent. The ECM cannot consistently raise idle to compensate for steering load.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
The power steering pressure sensor or switch sends a steering-load signal that helps the control module maintain idle during low-speed turns. P0554 sets when that signal drops out or changes unpredictably, often because of a loose connector, poor terminal contact, or a wiring fault affected by vibration.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Sensor connector loose or corroded
- Intermittent wiring fault
- Connector with intermittent contact under vibration
Symptoms
- Check-engine light on
- Idle may fluctuate intermittently during low-speed steering maneuvers
How to diagnose it
- Read freeze-frame data and check whether the fault occurred during a low-speed turn or when the vehicle was vibrating.
- Inspect the pressure-sensor connector for a loose fit, corrosion, moisture, or terminals that have backed out.
- Examine the harness along its route for chafing or damage, then monitor the signal while gently moving the wiring.
- Check circuit continuity and connections against the manufacturer's specification while looking for an intermittent open or short.
- If the wiring remains stable, test the pressure sensor or switch for intermittent output.
Common fixes
- Secure a loose pressure-sensor connector and restore proper terminal contact.
- Clean corroded terminals and protect the connector from contamination.
- Repair wiring damaged by chafing, vibration, or an intermittent break.
- Replace the pressure sensor or switch if its signal drops out with stable wiring.
Can I keep driving?
If steering and engine operation are normal, short cautious trips may be possible, but idle can dip unexpectedly during slow turns. Avoid situations where a sudden stall would be hazardous and stop if the engine begins stalling.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
