What it means
The control module detects a low input from the power steering pressure sensor/switch circuit.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
The power steering pressure sensor circuit carries a signal the control module uses to recognize steering load and help stabilize engine idle. P0552 sets when the circuit input is lower than expected, which can result from a short to ground, an open circuit, or poor connector contact.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Sensor circuit shorted to ground or open
- Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
- Harness chafing through insulation
Symptoms
- Check-engine light on
- Idle may dip or fluctuate while turning the steering wheel at low speed
How to diagnose it
- Read freeze-frame data and check whether low-speed steering or a change in engine idle coincides with the fault.
- Inspect the pressure-sensor connector and harness for corrosion, chafing, broken wires, or a loose terminal that could pull the signal low.
- Use the wiring diagram to check the circuit's power, ground, and signal connections against the manufacturer's specification.
- Measure the sensor signal at the connector and at the control-module end to locate an open or short to ground.
- If wiring and connections pass, test the power steering pressure sensor or switch using the manufacturer's procedure.
Common fixes
- Clean corroded terminals and secure the pressure-sensor connector.
- Repair chafed or broken wiring in the pressure-sensor circuit.
- Correct a short to ground or open circuit found during testing.
- Replace the pressure sensor or switch if its output remains low with a verified circuit.
Can I keep driving?
If the vehicle steers normally and the engine does not stall, cautious driving may be possible, though idle can dip during slow turns. Avoid driving if the engine stalls during steering or the steering system itself feels abnormal.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
