What it means
The control module detects a high input from the power steering pressure sensor/switch circuit.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
The power steering pressure sensor circuit reports steering load to the control module so it can help maintain engine idle during steering. P0553 sets when the circuit input is higher than expected, which can be caused by a short to supply or a faulty connection or sensor.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Sensor circuit shorted to supply
- Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
- Supply wire pinched against B+ source
Symptoms
- Check-engine light on
- Idle may dip or fluctuate while turning the steering wheel at low speed
How to diagnose it
- Read freeze-frame data and note whether the high input coincides with steering activity or an idle change.
- Inspect the pressure-sensor harness for pinching or contact with a power source, and check the connector for corrosion or displaced terminals.
- Use the wiring diagram to check circuit power, ground, and signal connections against the manufacturer's specification.
- Measure the signal at the sensor and control-module ends to find a short to supply or an open connection.
- If the wiring checks out, test the power steering pressure sensor or switch using the manufacturer's procedure.
Common fixes
- Secure the connector and repair loose or corroded terminals.
- Repair pinched wiring or insulation that is allowing the signal wire to contact a power source.
- Correct an open or shorted circuit identified during testing.
- Replace a pressure sensor or switch that produces a high signal with a verified circuit.
Can I keep driving?
If steering and engine operation remain normal, drive cautiously and watch for idle changes during slow turns. Avoid driving if the engine stalls or the steering system feels abnormal.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
