What it means
General electrical fault on the power steering pressure sensor. The ECU uses this signal to compensate idle speed when the steering load increases; without it idle stability can suffer during parking maneuvers.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
The power steering pressure sensor or switch reports steering-system load to the control module, which can adjust engine idle as pressure rises during steering. P0550 means the module has detected a general electrical fault in this signal circuit, so it may not recognize steering load reliably.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Pressure sensor failed
- Wiring or connector fault
Symptoms
- Check-engine light on
- Idle may dip or fluctuate while turning the steering wheel at low speed
How to diagnose it
- Read freeze-frame data and check whether the code appears when the steering wheel is turned at low speed.
- Inspect the power steering pressure sensor or switch connector and nearby wiring for looseness, corrosion, fluid contamination, or damage.
- Check the sensor circuit's power, ground, and signal connections using the wiring information and manufacturer's specification.
- Monitor the pressure-sensor signal while turning the steering wheel and check whether it changes as expected.
- Test the sensor or switch and circuit continuity to identify whether the fault is in the component or its wiring.
Common fixes
- Reconnect and secure a loose pressure-sensor connector.
- Clean corroded connector terminals and repair damaged wiring.
- Restore a faulty circuit power or ground connection.
- Replace a failed power steering pressure sensor or switch.
Can I keep driving?
You can usually drive cautiously if steering and braking feel normal, but the engine may dip or stall while parking or turning slowly. Avoid tight, low-speed maneuvers in traffic until the signal fault is repaired.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
