What it means
During cold-start the ECU runs an elevated rail pressure on direct-injection systems for better cold spray atomisation. The pressure target on bank 1 is not reached within the calibrated time window - typical for a high-pressure pump that loses output when cold or a pressure regulator with cold-stickiness.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
On a direct-injection engine, the fuel system raises rail pressure during a cold start so fuel can be delivered as commanded. P053F sets when the control module finds that the cold-start fuel pressure target for bank 1 is not reached within the allowed time; a weak high-pressure pump or sticking regulator when cold can cause this.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- HP pump output low when cold
- Pressure regulator sticking when cold
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Hard start, no start, or stalling under load
- Power loss especially at high load or rpm
- Possible long cranking time
How to diagnose it
- Review freeze-frame data for coolant and ambient temperatures, cranking time, and fuel pressure when the fault set; confirm it is tied to cold-start conditions.
- With a scan tool, compare commanded and actual high-pressure fuel rail pressure during a cold start, paying attention to the bank 1 system where data is available.
- Inspect the bank 1 fuel system connectors and wiring, and check for leaks or damaged lines without loosening high-pressure components.
- Check low-pressure fuel supply and related pressure-control data using the manufacturer's procedure before condemning the high-pressure pump.
- If supply and wiring are sound, test the high-pressure pump and pressure regulator under cold conditions according to the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure.
Common fixes
- Repair a loose or damaged connector or wiring fault affecting bank 1 fuel pressure control.
- Correct a verified low-pressure fuel supply problem that prevents the high-pressure system from meeting its target.
- Replace a pressure regulator confirmed to stick during cold starts.
- Replace a high-pressure fuel pump only after testing confirms inadequate cold output.
Can I keep driving?
Hard starting or stalling can make the vehicle unsafe in traffic, so avoid driving if it will not start reliably or loses power under load. Continued operation may lead to stalling or further drivability problems; arrange diagnosis before relying on the vehicle.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
