OBD-II fault code

P04CE: EGR Temperature Sensor C Circuit

What it means

EGR Temperature Sensor C Circuit: an electrical fault is present in the circuit. Without valid EGR feedback the ECU disables exhaust gas recirculation and may set further EGR codes.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

EGR temperature sensor C measures temperature in the exhaust gas recirculation system, and the control module uses its signal to assess EGR operation. P04CE sets when the sensor circuit has a general electrical fault, leaving the module without dependable temperature feedback.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Failed EGR temperature sensor
  2. Open or short in sensor wiring
  3. Loose or corroded connector

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Pinging or knocking under load
  • Power loss and hesitation
  • Possible rough idle
  • Failed emissions inspection (NOx)

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and check scan-tool readings for EGR temperature sensor C alongside other available EGR data.
  2. With the engine cool, inspect sensor C, its connector, and nearby wiring for heat damage, looseness, corrosion, or contamination.
  3. Check the sensor circuit for opens, shorts, and poor terminal contact using the wiring diagram and compare measurements with the manufacturer's specification.
  4. If the wiring and connector are sound, test sensor C according to the manufacturer's procedure.
  5. After repair, clear the code and confirm the sensor reading responds plausibly as the EGR system warms and operates.

Common fixes

  • Reconnect or clean a loose or corroded sensor C connector.
  • Repair heat-damaged or broken wiring in the sensor C circuit.
  • Replace EGR temperature sensor C if it fails testing.
  • Repair an EGR control or module fault only if circuit and sensor tests support it.

Can I keep driving?

If the engine runs normally and the warning light is steady, a short, gentle trip may be possible, but arrange diagnosis soon and avoid heavy load if it pings or loses power. Without valid EGR temperature feedback, emissions can rise and further EGR faults may occur.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
