OBD-II fault code

P04E7: EGR Temperature Sensor D Circuit Low

What it means

Same as P04D0 on EGR temperature sensor D. EGR mixes inert exhaust into intake to lower combustion peak temperature — too little raises NOx, too much causes misfires and rough running.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

EGR temperature sensor D sends a signal used by the control module to assess exhaust temperature in that part of the EGR system. P04E7 sets when the signal voltage is lower than the module expects, which can happen if the signal is shorted to ground or the connection has excessive resistance.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Signal shorted to ground
  2. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
  3. Harness chafing through insulation

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Pinging or knocking under load
  • Power loss and hesitation
  • Possible rough idle
  • Failed emissions inspection (NOx)

How to diagnose it

  1. Read freeze-frame data and sensor D's live value; check whether the module reports an implausibly low temperature or a signal that stays low as the engine warms.
  2. Inspect sensor D's connector for corrosion, moisture, bent pins, or poor terminal grip that could add resistance.
  3. Follow the sensor D signal wire and look for chafing or damaged insulation that could let it contact ground.
  4. Check the sensor signal and wiring for a short to ground using the manufacturer's test procedure.
  5. If the wiring and connector pass, test sensor D against the manufacturer's specification before replacing it.

Common fixes

  • Reconnect the sensor D connector and secure it against vibration.
  • Clean or repair corroded terminals and restore good terminal contact.
  • Repair the signal wire where it is chafed or shorted to ground.
  • Replace sensor D if it fails the manufacturer's specification.

Can I keep driving?

A short, gentle drive is generally reasonable if the engine is running smoothly and no severe knocking is present. Avoid heavy acceleration if it pings or hesitates, and address the fault before an emissions inspection because the low signal can impair EGR control.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
