What it means
EGR Temperature Sensor D Circuit: an electrical fault is present in the circuit. Without valid EGR feedback the ECU disables exhaust gas recirculation and may set further EGR codes.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
EGR temperature sensor D measures temperature in the exhaust gas recirculation system, giving the control module feedback about EGR operation. P04E5 sets when the electrical circuit for sensor D is faulty, so the module cannot rely on that temperature reading and may limit EGR operation.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Failed EGR temperature sensor
- Open or short in sensor wiring
- Loose or corroded connector
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Pinging or knocking under load
- Power loss and hesitation
- Possible rough idle
- Failed emissions inspection (NOx)
How to diagnose it
- Check freeze-frame data and scan-tool readings for EGR temperature sensor D, comparing its reading with other available temperature data when the engine is cold.
- Locate sensor D using the vehicle's service information and inspect its connector and nearby wiring for heat damage, looseness, or corrosion.
- Check whether the sensor reading changes plausibly as the engine and EGR system warm up.
- Test the sensor circuit for opens or shorts and check its connector terminals for poor contact.
- Test EGR temperature sensor D against the manufacturer's specification to distinguish a failed sensor from a wiring fault.
Common fixes
- Reconnect the sensor D connector and clean corroded terminals as appropriate.
- Repair heat-damaged, open, or shorted sensor wiring.
- Replace EGR temperature sensor D if it fails its specified test.
- Clear the fault and confirm the sensor reading responds plausibly as the EGR system warms.
Can I keep driving?
If the engine runs normally, cautious driving is generally possible, but avoid heavy loads if it pings, hesitates, or loses power. EGR control may be reduced, increasing NOx emissions and risking an inspection failure.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
