OBD-II fault code

P04B7: Fuel Fill Door Position Sensor Circuit Intermittent or Erratic

What it means

The position sensor or switch on the fuel fill door reports an intermittent signal - opens and closes randomly without matching the actual door position. Typically a connector or chafed harness fault.

How it works

The fuel-fill door position switch tells the control module whether the door is open or closed. The module monitors the signal for consistency with the door's actual position. P04B7 sets when that signal changes erratically or intermittently, often as a connector or wire moves.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Intermittent contact at connector
  2. Connector with intermittent contact under vibration
  3. Harness routed against vibrating component

Symptoms

  • Fuel-fill door status may appear inconsistent or change intermittently

How to diagnose it

  1. Read stored and pending codes and live fuel-door position data to see whether the reported state changes while the door remains still.
  2. Inspect the position-switch connector for looseness, corrosion, moisture, or pins that are not seated.
  3. Examine the harness near the door and hinge for chafing or contact with vibrating or moving parts.
  4. With live data displayed, gently move the connector and harness to check whether the reported door state flickers.
  5. Test the switch signal and wiring continuity while moving the harness, using the manufacturer's specification to identify an intermittent fault.

Common fixes

  • Secure a loose connector and clean or repair corroded terminals.
  • Repair chafed wiring and secure the harness away from moving or vibrating parts.
  • Replace the position switch if its signal remains intermittent with sound wiring.

Can I keep driving?

Driving is generally safe if the door is secure, but its status may be unreliable and the door may not lock or release as expected. Check that it is latched before driving and arrange repair if the fault affects security.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
