OBD-II fault code

P04DC: Fuel Fill Door Position Sensor Circuit Range or Performance

What it means

Same as P04B8 with the signal in plausible range yet not matching the actuator command - door reports closed when motor commanded open, or vice versa.

How it works

The fuel-fill door position sensor reports whether the door is open or closed, while the control module compares that feedback with the actuator command. P04DC sets when the signal remains electrically plausible but the reported position does not agree with the commanded position.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Fuel-fill door position sensor misadjusted or drifting
  2. Loose or corroded sensor connector
  3. Binding door or actuator affecting position feedback

Symptoms

  • Fuel-fill door position may display incorrectly
  • Door status may not match its actual position

How to diagnose it

  1. Check scan-tool freeze-frame data and command the fuel-fill door open and closed while watching its reported position to confirm when feedback disagrees.
  2. Inspect the door for binding, damage, or obstruction that could keep it from reaching the commanded position.
  3. Check the position sensor and its connector for looseness, corrosion, damage, or signs that the sensor has shifted out of adjustment.
  4. Watch the position signal while gently moving the door and harness to see whether feedback changes smoothly and consistently.
  5. Test the position sensor circuit and sensor operation against the manufacturer's specification, including whether the sensor changes state at the correct door positions.

Common fixes

  • Remove debris or correct binding at the fuel-fill door.
  • Reconnect and clean the position sensor connector, repairing damaged terminals as needed.
  • Adjust or secure the misaligned position sensor.
  • Replace a sensor that drifts or fails its specified test.
  • Repair the actuator or door mechanism if it cannot reach the commanded position.

Can I keep driving?

The code usually does not affect how the vehicle drives, but the fuel-fill door may not open or close as expected. Avoid forcing it; have the fault addressed if you cannot access the filler safely.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
